Seven colours
What Makes the Mountain Striped
Each band is a different mineral. The rust reds are iron oxide, the mustard yellows iron sulphide, the greens copper, the lavenders and whites clay and quartz. They were laid down flat over millions of years, then folded upright as the Nazca plate drove under South America. Ice covered the whole ridge until warming exposed it — which is why a mountain this striking has only been on the map since around 2015.
