Things to Know

What to know about the Rainbow Mountain hike at 5,200 m

  • Difficulty: Moderate to demanding — not because of the terrain, which is a wide walking path, but because of the altitude. Roughly 6 km round trip with 1.5–2 hours of climbing.
  • Altitude: The viewpoint sits at 5,020–5,036 m and the summit at about 5,200 m. Cusco itself is 3,399 m, so the mountain is roughly 1,800 m higher than the city you sleep in.
  • Acclimatisation: Spend at least 1–2 days in Cusco before this tour. Arriving from sea level and going straight to 5,200 m is how altitude sickness happens.
  • Duration: About 13 hours door to door — pick-up between 4:00 and 5:00 AM, back in Cusco around 5:00 PM.
  • Best season: April to October is the dry season, with the clearest skies. From November to March expect rain, and snow on the ridge that can cover the colours entirely.
  • Weather: Near freezing at the viewpoint even under bright sun, with constant wind. Layers matter more here than any other piece of gear.
  • Group size: 15–20 travellers on shared departures. Private departures run for your group alone, minimum two people.
  • Horses: Available on the trail from local families, roughly 70–90 soles per stretch, paid directly to the owner. Worth considering for children and older travellers.

Rainbow Mountain: The Full-Day Tour from Cusco

Vinicunca sits about 100 km southeast of Cusco, on the flank of the Ausangate massif. Getting there means an early start and about three hours of road each way, a little longer coming back, which is why the day is built around two hot meals and a deliberately unhurried walk. You will be back in Cusco by early evening with the highest photograph of your trip.

Why the Rainbow Mountain Tour from Cusco Is Worth It

The stripes come from bands of sediment rich in iron, copper, sulphur and clay, laid down flat over millions of years and then tilted upright as the Andes rose. Glacial ice hid the whole ridge until recent warming exposed it, which is why Vinicunca only entered the guidebooks around 2015. From the viewpoint at 5,020–5,036 m you also look straight across at Ausangate, at 6,384 m the highest peak in the Cusco region and a mountain still treated as an apu — a protective spirit — by the communities below it.

What to Expect on the Rainbow Mountain Tour from Cusco

Pick-up is at 4:00 AM, followed by breakfast in Cusipata. At the Pachaschaka station an instructor runs through the controls before you ride roughly thirty minutes across the plain; no previous experience is needed.

From base camp the trail climbs steadily for 3.5 km across open puna — no scrambling, no drop-offs, just a long rise through grassland where llamas and alpacas graze. Most people reach the viewpoint in 1.5 to 2 hours. The altitude is the real work, so guides set a slow rhythm and stop often, and horses can be hired on the trail for any stretch you would rather ride.

At the Viewpoint

The last rise opens onto the ridge itself, with the striped slope directly in front of you and the glaciated bulk of Ausangate across the valley. Your guide explains what each colour band is made of and where the best angles are, and there is time to catch your breath and take photographs before the descent. Bring layers: it is often close to freezing up here even in bright sun, and the wind on the ridge is constant.

Why Book This Vinicunca Tour With Us
