Things to Know
What to know about the Pallay Punchu hike at 4,780 m
- Difficulty: Easy by the standards of this range: a wide, marked path with no scrambling. About 1.5 km and 45 minutes up, with roughly 200 m of climbing. The altitude is what makes it feel like work.
- Altitude: The ridge tops out around 4,780 m, some 400 m lower than Vinicunca, and the trail starts near 4,580 m. Cusco is 3,399 m, so you are still well above the city you sleep in.
- Acclimatisation: Lower than Vinicunca, but still altitude. Give yourself a day or two in Cusco first rather than coming straight up from the coast.
- Duration: About 11 hours door to door. The road is the long part — roughly three and a half hours each way to the Layo area, south of Cusco.
- Crowds: The reason to come. Where Vinicunca can hold hundreds of people on a clear morning, here you will often share the ridge with a handful.
- Entrance: Small and informal. Some days a community member collects a few soles at the trailhead and some days nobody is there — carry a little cash in soles either way.
- Best season: May to October, the dry season, when the sky is clear and the stripes show. Rain between November and March can flatten the colours.
- Weather: Cold and windy on the ridge whatever the forecast says, with strong sun in between. The same layers you would take to Vinicunca.
- Group size: 15–20 travellers on shared departures, the same as our Vinicunca tours. Private departures run for your group alone.
About the Rainbow Mountain Tour from Cusco

Vinicunca sits about 100 km southeast of Cusco, on the flank of the Ausangate massif. Getting there means an early start and about three hours of road each way, a little longer coming back, which is why the day is built around two hot meals and a deliberately unhurried walk. You will be back in Cusco by early evening with the highest photograph of your trip.
Why the Rainbow Mountain Tour from Cusco Is Worth It
The stripes come from bands of sediment rich in iron, copper, sulphur and clay, laid down flat over millions of years and then tilted upright as the Andes rose. Glacial ice hid the whole ridge until recent warming exposed it, which is why Vinicunca only entered the guidebooks around 2015. From the viewpoint at 5,020–5,036 m you also look straight across at Ausangate, at 6,384 m the highest peak in the Cusco region and a mountain still treated as an apu — a protective spirit — by the communities below it.
What to Expect on the Rainbow Mountain Tour from Cusco
Pick-up is at 4:00 AM, with breakfast in Sicuani on the way. The van ride is the long part — about three and a half hours to the trailhead — and the walk itself is a gentle 1.5 km to the ridge.
From base camp the trail climbs steadily for 3.5 km across open puna — no scrambling, no drop-offs, just a long rise through grassland where llamas and alpacas graze. Most people reach the viewpoint in 1.5 to 2 hours. The altitude is the real work, so guides set a slow rhythm and stop often, and horses can be hired on the trail for any stretch you would rather ride.
At the Viewpoint
The last rise opens onto the ridge itself, with the striped slope directly in front of you and the glaciated bulk of Ausangate across the valley. Your guide explains what each colour band is made of and where the best angles are, and there is time to catch your breath and take photographs before the descent. Bring layers: it is often close to freezing up here even in bright sun, and the wind on the ridge is constant.
Why Book This Vinicunca Tour With Us
Plenty of operators run this route; the differences show up at 5,000 m. Our guides are bilingual, certified in first aid and carry portable oxygen on every departure. Both meals are included rather than sold on the roadside, the minibus is a proper tourist vehicle with a professional driver, and group sizes stay at 15–20 so nobody is left walking alone. You pay the official entrance in cash at the community ticket post — we tell you the exact amount in advance so there are no surprises.

Rainbow Mountain FAQ
Moderate to demanding. The path itself is wide and non-technical, but you are walking above 4,600 m, where the air holds roughly half the oxygen of sea level. It is about 3.5 km each way and most people take 1.5 to 2 hours going up. Guides deliberately set a slow pace and stop often.
Yes. Spend a minimum of one to two days in Cusco (3,399 m) before going to Vinicunca. Coming straight from the coast or from Lima and attempting 5,200 m on your first day is the single most common cause of a ruined trip.
April through October is the dry season and gives the clearest skies and the most reliable colours. Between November and March it rains frequently, and fresh snow on the ridge can hide the stripes completely for a day or two.
Yes. Local families offer horses along the route for roughly 70 to 90 soles per stretch, paid directly to the owner in cash. The horse takes you most of the way up; the final few hundred metres to the viewpoint must be walked.
No. The official entrance is 25 soles for Peruvian nationals and 30 soles for foreign visitors, paid in cash at the community ticket post on the day. Bring it in small notes — nobody up there takes cards.
Children from around eight can manage it if they are used to walking, and older travellers do it regularly. For both, hiring a horse for the ascent is worth planning in advance. If you have heart or lung conditions, check with your doctor before booking a day at 5,200 m.
Your guide carries portable oxygen and a first-aid kit and is trained to use both. The standard response is to stop, administer oxygen and descend — descent resolves almost every case quickly. Tell your guide early rather than pushing on quietly.
Yes, basic facilities at the breakfast stop and near base camp. They usually charge 1 to 2 soles, so keep a few coins accessible. There are no facilities on the trail itself between base camp and the viewpoint.

Red Valley, Palcoyo & Other Cusco Day Trips
Vinicunca is the headline, but it is not the only striped ridge in the region — and the Red Valley is a ten-minute detour from the summit. Message us and we will put together the combination that fits your days in Cusco.
Rainbow Mountain + Red Valley
Add the Red Valley viewpoint to the same day — a short detour from the Vinicunca summit into a valley of deep rust-coloured ridges.
Ask on WhatsAppPalcoyo Rainbow Mountain
Three striped ridges instead of one, at a lower altitude with a much gentler walk. The sensible choice if you are short on acclimatisation.
Ask on WhatsAppPallay Punchu
The jagged 'poncho' ridge near Layo — newer, quieter and dramatically different in shape from Vinicunca.
